Maybe Mark can explain what PINE does about it, and other client implementors about their programs respectively?
Gnus visually mark \Recent articles with "N". However, since for many typical environments \Recent is, according to the specification, both unreliable and have undefined semantics, Gnus also implement a client-side version. Client-side recent articles are marked visually with ".", and it is used when Gnus haven't displayed the article to the user before (which is orthogonal to read/unread status).
I'm not the implementor, but Mulberry lets the user decide. You can choose to display as "new" messages that:
- are unseen - are recent - are recent and unseen
I choose the last option, even though it's not always accurate. -- Sebastian Hagedorn PGP key ID: 0x4D105B45 Ehrenfeldgürtel 156 50823 Köln http://www.spinfo.uni-koeln.de/~hgd/
