This sounds like your clients are configured to show time in UTC (the time 
zone formerly known as GMT), which is also the timezone that UNIX uses 
internally.  You seem to be on the east coast, which is UTC-5, so any 
times displayed in UTC would appear to be 5 hours ahead.

Make sure that your client systems are configured to be in the proper time 
zone.
