Mark and all,

On our IMAP server, the folder list may change through an action outside of the client
application. The client is
expected to update its folder list accordingly.
However, it appears that some clients do not requery the folder list when they should
and only show folders
which they created themselves.

To see an updated folder list, the user needs to actively 'refresh folder list' (or
alike) and users either don't
understand or forget about it.

Questions :
Is there a generally accepted technique to advise (or force) a client to requery the
folder list? We currently
send an [ALERT], but that's less than optimal.

Would it make sense to send a bunch of unilateral, untagged LIST responses [ * LIST ()
"/" foo/bar ], even when
the client did not ask? Would any known client actually use that information?

Thanks,
Ulrich Schwanitz
