Apologies if this has been covered but reading the appropriate RFCs (3501 & 2195) and a Google search fails to yield useful information.

1. RFC 3501 (IMAP4rev1) allows userids to be astring/quoted/literal which of course means they main contain whitespace.

2. RFC 2195 (CRAM-MD5 POP IMAP Authentication) specifies the response returned from the client is: userid SPACE digest

However RFC 2195 makes no mention of what should be done when userid contains whitespace. The obvious solution is to quote the userid but is this standard practice? What's the recommended solution? Can anybody direct me to the relevant RFC?

Thanks for any help!
