I admit that this error is somewhat strange, and I'm unable to reproduce it (python 2.7, ubuntu 11.10 - but distutils doesn't seem to be changed). Are you sure to have the python-setuptools package installed, and that there are no other packages/modules with the same name installed somewhere else on the system?
