I built the latest openmrs and added the tribe module from the
repository. I can get the Tribe attribute in the patient pages.

In, Administration ->  Person - Manage Person Attribute Types
Did you add "Tribe" in where it should come up in Listing and Viewing
of Person Attribute Types
E.g.
Patient Listing Attributes: Tribe
Patient Viewing Attributes: Tribe
