Since I saw that other people weren't having this behavior, I tried
reinstalling Revolution. Now the backdrop color is remembered and the "new"
button acts like it's supposed to. I would guess that the problems were
there because of low memory the first time I installed Revolution, before
upgrading my computer's memory. Now, after starting over clean, both
problems are gone.
