I too was trying to get this to happen so here is what I have discovered: 1. If you change the Look & Feel to Mac OS Emulated instead of Appearance Manager, it will show your selected colour.
2. Turn off Show border for the button, in either Mac Look & Feel mode. I understand why the Appearance Manager can override your settings to insist on standard buttons, but I don't see why turning off the border should do anything, unless this is considered so non-standard that App Manager doesn't care anymore!
