The database had to be fool proof and Filemaker couldn't and still can't provide the flexibility of Rev/HC/MC/etc. I'd do the same thing today. I used an applescript on the Filemaker server machine to talk to the various fields and in turn applescript on each client embedded in Hypercard to talk via program sharing to the servers applescript.
