All,

As a risk analyst and statistics student, I'm looking for definitions of
"impute" and "imputation" in the statistical context of topics discussed on
this list server. I'd like solid references such as text books or journal
articles.

How did the word impute come to be used in the statistical context?

How does imputing values differ from predicting them? It would seem that
imputation is just predicting values with the goal of filling holes in a
data set.

I'd sure like to get some more insight!

Thanks.
