SAS is aware of this problem and told me it would be fixed in version 9.

Subject: IMPUTE: PROC MI in SAS v9
Greetings.
In SAS v8.1/8.2, PROC MI tended to break down after more than
about 50 variables were included in the imputation set. Does
anyone have any information on whether this has been improved in
v9? I didn't have any luck searching the SAS website.
