I think accessing smb shares on a Mac has always been buggy. I've had problems where if a mac goes to sleep, it loses the connection and only way out is a reboot. I've had this since leopard to lion.
I'm now implementing a solution called Extremez-IP, which translates smb to afp on Windows and lets u connect to your Windows share via afp. I'll let u guys know how it goes.
