Download perian from here: http://perian.org It's tiny, quick and free. It might however have some bugs like slow performance for mkv files. The best thing to do then is to try VLC or MplayerX. I prefer MplayerX over vlc because it remembers the position of video where you left off last time you played it and it has an interface similar to QuickTime unlike VLC which could refine a bit on it's looks.
