The OpenSolaris 2008.05 LiveCD is finally out: http://www.opensolaris.com/get/index.html
I don't know if anyone here can still remember that, almost three years ago, we had to download 6 CDs one at a time at a maximum speed of (if we were lucky) 100 KB/sec of download speed? Amazing, how time flies and how things have changed. Three years ago, I bought an HP dz2000e, one of the first AMD64 notebooks, with the only purpose to test how far Solaris will go, in the desktop/notebook arena. I was able to install Solaris. But that was about it, no network, no sound, almost no application tools, & at one time I didn't even have graphics. But now, everything works--including the wireless, and works so solidly. Again, how things have changed! I am sure we all know that, even if Indiana/OpenSolaris tastes like dog sh*t many will still enthusiastically savor it because of ZFS and DTrace. But, regardless, Sun still puts out such great efforts to have made the OpenSolaris LiveCD such a thing of beauty. I remember Exxon used to have an ARAMCO (American-Arab Oil Company) Division where we worked with engineers from our partner countries on their own oil fields. Simulations were done on IBM and Cray mainframes but we were most intimate with Sun's SPARC workstations, to which we have grown strong and lasting affections. Earlier this year, some of our almuni managed to convince their empolyer (Kuwaitt National Oil Company) to purchase one of Sun's Cluster systems to do both simulation and IT work. Oil companies are very conservative--they often look at what others did before they do. Whether this will set a trend, we don't know. But I do know that many of my old buddies will be thrilled to find out that they can run Solaris on their home machine, and that Sun has put out so much care into this little CD, just like it always did on those big SPARC machines. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ indiana-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/indiana-discuss
