Hi John,
This doesn't sound like a ZFS problem. It sounds as if the installer has
an issue managing the partition data. I have some questions and a
request for some additional data.

How did you create this empty partition? What utility did you use? I
assume you had rebooted the system in between changing the partition
sizes and restarting the installer?

So, the other 40GB, was it just unallocated after the installation? If you
could send the partition table info that would be great.

It would be helpful to see the logs from the OpenSolaris installation. I
could then see if the installer really only asked for 20GB or if there
is an error somewhere in a lower level. AFter installation the logs
would be in:
/var/sadm/system/logs/.
