Well, on my 24", 1920x1200, 96dpi display here, the 72x72 icons are  
(not surprisingly) 3/4" wide and high[1].  That's bigger than our  
default icon size, but they don't look huge on a 24" display by any  
means.  I can certainly imagine some people using that size for  
desktop or file manager icons, on a 24" or 30" display.

Of course, if we don't ship the 72x72 size, the 48x48s will just be  
scaled up as required.  So I agree it's not necessary to ship them, if  
it helps-- I'd maybe have pushed a bit harder to include the 64x64s if  
we had any of those, but we don't :)
