You wouldn't want to check at installation - perhaps at X server
startup, since some people change monitors on their computers (and
with laptops, do so more often).   I don't know how to check - I
suspect something in EDID would tell us, but I don't know enough
about the EDID spec.

This is a freetype bug from the upstream 2.3.6 release that's fixed
in build 97 by upgrading to 2.3.7.    You should be able to find a
few dozen e-mails spread across various opensolaris mailing list
archives on bad fonts in builds 93-96 that have the bug details.
