This is the long-term intention, but all of the current development eggs
are in the desktop basket to get Solaris decent for companies like Sun
itself to use in-house in place of Windows. Server support is not an
unreasonable or hard task to accomplish, it would require a lot of
experimentation and basic debugging skills in addition to what's
documented for each ips package so that one could strip out X11
dependencies. A FreeBSD ports source model for custom packages to
lessen the dependency and give users the freedom is needed but of course
would not be a supported case initially like binary packages. At this
point it's going to not be Sun spinning a server variant of OpenSolaris,
but rather the community since they seem too busy to deal with it in the
2008.11 timeframe which is over in about 3 weeks.
