Some further info:

1. One of the main advantages of being able to install into and then boot from
a USB stick is that, I can use the same USB flash stick on all my Intel
Centrino-based notebooks, regardless of their manufacturers (so far I have
tried os 2008.05 on my Centrino-based notebooks made by Lenovo, HP, and
Gateway, all worked like a charm). Perhaps "Intel Dave" would be very
interested in seeing this problem solved. :-)

2. I have tried installing Ubuntu into a USB flash, but twice it screwed up my
MBR (& I am a very experienced Linux user). I am scared to try it again.

With OpenSolaris, whether it worked or not, I never had any problem booting
back into either Windows Vista or Linux, after unplugging the USB flash stick.
Knock on wood.

3. OpenSolaris can be very easily installed into a compressed zfs pool. I
have a bunch of 8GB USB flash sticks (@ $19.99 per stick from Costco). With
regard to cost and storage space provided, this is almost the perfect media to
play with and really learn OpenSolaris, especially to enjoy the benefits of the
IPS.

(I am wondering whether it will also compress VirtualBox images--thus making it
possible to run Vista from a USB stick. Anyone has an answer?)

4. Most of the new notebooks come with either 3GB or 4GB or DDR2 memory. ZFS
can utilize this memory better than any other OS--I actually found it snappier
running os2008.05 from an external USB stick than from Vista.
