Ok so I tried some things... I tried using grub to edit the boot options, I:
1) removed the 'console=graphical' entirely - still get the graphical boot. 2) changed 'graphical' to 'text' - Screen gets all whacked out (all sorts of short blue and orange horizontal lines) 3) got rid of the foreground, background, and splash lines - no effect that I can see. I'm going to add -kv next.
