how do you go into single-user mode?
When in grub, hit 'e' , delete the lines starting with
foreground,background and splash ( 'd' ) and finally remove the
'console=graphics' part of the kernel line and append '-s' to it.

gdm doesn't allow root or any user with  an empty password to login...
