Detlef/Brian, Another alternative is to go with the contributed builds: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/2.0.0.19/contrib/. The Solaris 10 builds work on OpenSolaris box with some tweak to disable patch checker.
