First thing is to be sure you are not running the splash screens etc. You want to see what's happening in the boot. A -k on your kernel line will run the debugger if you crash. I'm not sure how to get into the debugger if it does not crash. Adding a -v to the kernel line will show you what it is doing while you are booting.
