I have to admit that OpenSolaris, a la beadm, zfs, etc., is so far advanced 
relative to, and in such a different league from, anything that is imaginable 
in Linux, I don't think we can discuss this matter in terms of "something 
similar".  But I believe your concerns have been easily addressed with a "beadm 
activate" command.  This step is omitted in this discussion, as it is pretty 
much a given thing.
