Im kinda confused as to what "pkg image-update" is actually meant to do. Can
anyone enlighten me ?

It does, sort of. The difference with OpenSolaris is that it's integrated with the Live Upgrade feature which uses ZFS clones, so it updates to an alternate boot environment. You'll need to activate the new boot environment and reboot through beadm(1M). See http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/2008.11/snapupgrade/snap3.html

It's possible that there's not much (if anything... I seem to recall updating once) to update, since you likely are likely using the release repository. This should just get you publicly available fixes to the current packages (kind of like patches), not upgrades. The next set of updates expected to hit the /release repository will likely be in June of this year.

If you're looking to go to the latest development releases (where many things will be updated!), change your pkg configuration to point to the dev/ repository as discussed on the pkg project page: http://opensolaris.org/os/project/pkg/

Hope that helps,

- Matt
