Yes it could be.  Without messing about with the SMF stuff, you can
select which filesystems should be snapshotted at which intervals, eg.

# zfs set com.sun:auto-snapshot=false rpool
# zfs set com.sun:auto-snapshot:hourly=true rpool/export
 etc.

with the usual ZFS inheritance rules being respected.

There is no GUI to tune this more finely, but I suggestions on what
exactly the gui should look like would be welcome.  I think the balance
between what's exposed in the current gui vs. the command line tools is
a good one, in that it avoids this sort of thing:
