Quite so.  Not much of a question, if you ask me ;-)

I agree - the interaction of the update manager is pretty poor. It should at the very least try and prompt you to reboot into the new BE. UM should also probably know the difference between a milestone update (say going from 2008.11 to 2009.06) and other types of updates [1]. Hopefully the relevant folks are already looking at this and figuring out the best user experience.
