Edge scrolling used to be popular, but it is less common due to multitouch. Multitouch works great on opensolaris. You use two fingers to scroll left/right and up/down. It works better than the edge scrolling. But I think if there was a detection that if multitouch is not available then you could fall back on edge scrolling. What is your laptop model?
