The pkg(5) team is pleased to announce that a snapshot of the OpenSolaris

The contents of the ISO images discussed below can be used to setup a local
mirror of the OpenSolaris 2009.06 repository to accelerate zone creation, or
for off-line or private network usage where access to pkg.opensolaris.org
isn't available. It is offered in two forms, and both support x86 and SPARC
systems.

Hey, great stuff!

Is it possible to have sparc-only and x86-only images? That would significantly
reduce the amount of data that needs to be downloaded.

Hi,

The packages in the repository at pkg.opensolaris.org are multi-variant packages. What that means is that each package contains *all* supported architectures. Since this release is a copy of the packages contained on pkg.opensolaris.org, the resulting images have to contain both x86 and SPARC data.

This is especially important once we start signing package manifests, as the only way to ensure that the package you're installing is valid and matches those at pkg.opensolaris.org will be to ensure that it hasn't been altered in any way.

With that said, we will be looking at alternative ways to further reduce the download size as much as possible for future offerings (compression methods, repository format, etc.).

Cheers,
