If I understand correctly, you already delete the b121 BE right?
you can boot the system by b118 liveCD or liveUSB, and try to install the grub
again to see if it can help.

$ pfexec installgrub <-m> /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2
/dev/rdsk/<yourdisk>

Already done this but am loathe to do a test reboot yet due to still seeing the same error above when trying to use ‘beadm activate’. (it’s quite a pain to manually type in your grub config on the console!) (and also because I’m remote from the system for the next 6 hours)

I’ve discovered an entry in d.o.o which has the same issues, but much earlier and form a different root cause. Not sure how this is going to help me though.
