That's exactly what I had.  Thanks to all.  I had

72.5.123.21 pkg.opensolaris.org

in my /etc/hosts file for some reason (I don't remember adding it, but I guess I must have: the snapshots tell me it's been there since Sep 1 2008). It threw me that dig & host worked fine, everything worked fine before I went on holiday, the pkg utilities and web browsers both gave connection refused, and this was now failing on both my desk machine at work and my laptop at home.

Anyway, case solved.
