Dialysis Unit
OUR VISION
We are aiming to setup a Kidney Centre which would be dedicated to provide
highly subsidized dialysis for destitute and low-income kidney patients.
OUR MISSION
The centre missions to enrich the quality of life of patients with renal
failure in Kerala, by providing quality medical care to people who seek medical
aid in lower socio economic strata of the society.
WHY ARE THE KIDNEYS SO IMPORTANT TO GOOD HEALTH?
The main job of our kidneys (which are roughly the size of two fists and are
located deep in our abdomen, beneath our rib cage) is to remove toxins and
excess water from our blood. Every day our kidneys filter an average of 200
liters of blood – a quantity that would fill 20 buckets! Besides this
impressive, daily feat, kidneys also help to control our blood pressure, to
produce red blood cells and to keep our bones healthy.
If our kidneys gradually lose their ability to function, we speak of Chronic
Kidney Disease (CKD). It is a "silent" disease and often goes unnoticed because
it may not be "felt". Yet it affects many more people than we would ever
imagine: studies of different races living on different continents worldwide
have consistently shown that about 1 out of 10 adults has some form of kidney
damage.
The patients with end stage renal disease either receive a new, transplanted
kidney or they are kept alive with "dialysis" – a machine that cleans their
blood about three times a week.
In most parts of the world, once end-stage kidney failure occurs, patients do
not have access to maintenance hemodialysis treatment or kidney transplantation
and simply die. For these reasons, it is time to speak up and to speak clearly,
because the extent and severity of kidney disease has not been appreciated for
a long time.
The decision makers of public health and biomedical science view kidney disease
as infrequent and costly. However, newer information and scientific evidence
have given persuasive proof that there is more kidney disease than had been
thought. Developed countries worldwide treat more than 1,000,000 individuals
yearly, and as many as 250,000 new cases each year. Kidney disease is
increasing rapidly in the developing world, along with the prevalence of
diabetes and hypertension. More than 2 million Indians are estimated to have
kidney diseases with 15,000 persons every year being added to the list.
However, since dialysis costs can average INR 150000/-lac per year and
transplantation can cost up to INR 500000/- lac neither is available to the
vast majority of people living outside the developed world. Over 1.5 million
individuals around the world receive dialysis or have had a kidney transplant.
The cost of treating these chronic diseases, already 80% of many health care
budgets, represents a leading threat to public health and healthcare resources
worldwide. The only feasible global response to this pending health and
socio-economic crisis is chronic disease prevention.
Manpower Requirement
Nephrologist, nursing staff, technicians, support services staff and
administrative staff will be required.
