Patna: With the word ‘madrassa’ emerge in the mind images of students clad
in sectarian attires, complete with a quintessential skull cap on the head,
reciting verses from the Holy Koran. Going by the results of Bihar State
Madrassa Examination Board the traditional roll model is a part of the truth
and not the whole truth.

Time to shed these stereotypes seem to have come. In a departure from the
tradition, even non Muslim students are welcome in these madrassas.

Going by the nomenclature of most of the madrassas in the country, they seem
to cater to the educational needs of only one section of the society. So
what?

Missionary schools and colleges too bear the names depicting their religious
denomination and symbols. This does not come in the way of their educating
people of other communities. Non Christian students studying in these
institutions outnumber Christians.

Education is education irrespective of whether you obtain it from a
Christian missionary school, a Hindu vidya mandir or a madrassa. A student
can enroll with any school be it Christian, Hindu or Muslim managed, as long
as it caters to the educational needs of the student.

Among the names emerging from the list of students who have passed various
grade exams conducted by BSMEB this year are Surya Narayan Sah, Priyanka
Kumari, Pooja Kumari and Preetam Kumari. These students are among 100 Hindu
students, both girls and boys, of Madrassa Islamia, Sandalpur in Araria
district.
