AllahY tells us that this world a place of temporary abode, adorned with
transient beauty and that He made it a place of test and not a place of
settlement.****

*Kahf 18: 7. **Verily! We have made that which is on earth as an adornment
for it, in order that We may test them (mankind) as to which of them are
best in deeds. 8. And verily! We shall make all that is on it (the earth) a
bare dry soil (without any vegetation or trees, etc.).*

How long are we going to take to learn this most basic of lessons, my
brothers and sisters, that one day we will have to leave this world.
Whether we live in a grass hut or in a palace of gold, we will have to
leave it and stand before the One who created us and to Whom is our return.
When will we learn that on that Day, what will matter is what we did – not
what we had. What will matter is how we earned what we owned, not how much
we owned. What will matter is our assets in the world that we will enter –
which we have to create while we live in this world; not our assets in this
world which we will leave behind when we go into the next world. When will
be remember that we will be rewarded for what we send ahead of us and
questioned for what we leave behind? When will we learn to focus on
building assets in the Aakhira and not sell the Aakhira for the sake of
this Duniya? When will the palaces of gold and silver and single pearls in
the Jannah become real for us? Wise investors only invest in what is real,
not in fantasies of never-never land.****

Investing means to do let go what you have in the hope of getting what you
expect. You only invest when what you expect is better than what you have.
So let us ask, ‘How real are Jannah and Jahannam to me?’ Let us ask, ‘Which
is more important? This Duniya and success in it or the Aakhira and success
there?’ This life is a test. Our wealth is a test. Our children are a test.
The power and authority that we have over others is a test. Let us ask
ourselves, ‘Am I passing this test of failing in it?’ The beauty of this
Deen of ours is that if one follows the Deen, then we can have success in
the Duniya while building a great future for ourselves in the Aakhira. The
problem happens only when we sacrifice the Aakhira for the sake of the
Duniya. Just try a simple self-test. Today all parents who have children
sitting for Board exams are losing sleep, missing out the otherwise most
essential and critical places of attendance – the unislamic functions in
our weddings and so on – consumed with anxiety about their child’s result
in the exam and with worry about what will happen if he or she fails. I ask
them to reflect on how anxious they are that their child doesn’t know more
than 3 small Suras of the Qur’an and those also he can’t recite properly
because he was not taught Tajweed. How anxious are they that their own best
investment in the Aakhira – their best Thawaab ul Jaariya – doesn’t know
AllahY or His Messengerr, is careless about the Fara’idh, doesn’t follow
the Sunnah and when you ask him, ‘Do you know what is Tahajjud?’ He
replies, ‘Who is she?’ ****

What does this tell us about the truth of our own location in this life
–which AllahY called a Test?****

*"The good deed and the evil deed are not equal. Repel (the evil) with that
which is better, then behold, the one between whom he and you there was
enmity (will become) as though he were a close friend." [Surah Fussilat: 34]

Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (evil) with what is better; then the
enmity between him and you will become as if it were your friend and intimate!
