1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN SECRETARY:

It’s workshop time all over! Once again I would like to thank all those who
responded to the idea of organizing a workshop. We got an overwhelming
response and all the seats got booked out within a matter of days. This is
the third workshop in series which we are conducting to create more & more
awareness, also to create a fleet of volunteers and shape-up their work in
correct way. The first workshop was organized with one speaker and over 15
participants. It was conducted at Hariyali’s office in Thane, while for the
second workshop we had 25 people and 2 speakers at Anuradha’s terrace. Now
third session has been organized at a hotel, with 40 participants & 5
speakers. That’s going great guns! I am extremely thankful to Hariyali for
their continuous support over 3 years.

I am happy that my innovative ideas to get like minded people together are
flourishing. Thank you so much on behalf of needy animals – Future depends
on you!

Your for Animals / for Nature

3. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS:

## As usual our ‘Snake Rescue Cell Team’ was busy with rescue of snakes with
help from Kalyan forest department. PAWS volunteers Subhash, Manish, Kedar
and Nilesh received a total of 12 calls out of which we rescued snakes in
10. These included Common Indian Cobra, Rate Snake, Water Snake and Wolf
Snake. All snakes were released in their appropriate habitat within 24
hours.

## On 11th April, PAWS received a call from Thane SPCA about an injured cow
in Kalyan lying by a roadside. The call came to SPCA, was attended by their
ambulance with paperwork done by PAWS staff. Next day the cow died at the
hospital, after doing postmortem @ SPCA they found that the cow had eaten
almost 20 kilos plastic which had blocked all her functions. Its high time
we realize & act towards not littering in public places, not to throw
garbage on roads & segregate the waste.

## On 4th March PAWS received a call for an injured barn owl, which was
rescued by PAWS volunteer Saurabh Choughule, and was later handed over to
Thane SPCA for further rehabilitation.

## This month our Dombivli-Kalyan ambulance rescued a total of 68 distressed
animals which included 10 Dogs caught for sterilization.

6. BEAT THE HEAT INITIATIVE FOR STRAYS:

We thank Dr. Nandita Shah of Sharan Trust & anonymous donor for contributing
for our last month’s ‘beat the heat’ initiative. This month also our
initiative will continue.

Every summer, stray cattle, dogs and other animals thirst for water in the
sweltering heat. This year, PAWS launched ‘Beat the Heat’ initiative which
involves building water troughs near pavements and roadside edges.

These are square-sized mud pots affixed to pavement corners & filled with
water everyday. Now the thirsting cow or working donkey, running cat or
stray dog will have drinking water facility. The project is funded through
local donations and managed by PAWS trustees Mr. Nilesh Bhanage, Ms. Anjali
Ekbote and volunteer Ms. Amita Kulkarni.

The task is to build hundred water troughs.

8. STRAY FEEDING / PET DOG ISSUES / TREE CUTTING:

## On 21st April, PAWS office received a written complaint from Mr. Navnit
Khandelwal of Royal Residency – Kalyan that his society takes objection to
keeping a Doberman in a flat. Although the dog is not harmful, also children
are very fond of him & society does not have mentioned in their constitution
about keeping dogs but still society is not accepting that. PAWS issued a
stern letter to society to resolve the matter. We are still awaitng reply.
