Dear Inderjeet
We have long been using the name Brassica oleracea var. acephala DC. for for
both Kale used as vegetable and ornamental kale or flowering cabbage. Now it
is understood that flowering kale is B. oleracea var. sabellica L. (and
naturally B. oleracea var. acephala of most authors (auct.) and not DC. as
synonym). Brassica oleracea var. acephala DC is now correctly known as B.
oleracea var. viridis L. , accordingly correct name for kale used as
vegetable (also known as collards, kale, cow cabbage, Portuguese kale, and
our own famous Kashmiriri Karam Saag).
Accordingly the correct citation is:
Ornamental Kale- Brassica oleracea var. sabellica L. (Syn: B. oleracea var.
acephala auct. (non DC.))
Kale, Karam Saag- B. oleracea var. viridis L. (Syn: B. oleracea var.
acephala DC.)
