Respected Sir,
I have never seen this fruit-colour in *Memecylon
umbellatum*. In literature also M. umbellatum fruits are reported to be
yellow and finally bluish-black in colour. However, the leaves in the
images are similar to those of *M. umbellatum*. Bremer(1979) commented that
sometimes the flowers (of *M. umbellatum*) are pinkish but this small
variation does not merit recognition of a variety and he treated *M.
rubro-caeruleum* Thwaites and subsequently *M. edule* var. *rubro-caerulea*
(Thwaites) Clarke in synonymy of *M. umbellatum*. It seems to me that in
this formerly recognized variety the pink calyx may eventually ripen into
pink berries as evident from the attached photographs. Therefore, it is
wise to treat this individual as *Memecylon umbellatum* Burm. f.

      Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

Moumita Das Das
