Dear friends,

I am putting here the message of Dr Robert H. Archer, for sake of continuity
of this thread.

.......................................................................

Dear All

I just returned from fieldwork in Madagascar. Based more on the supplied
description, I am reasonably satisfied this plant is what is Elaeodendron
balae (Kostermans) R.H. Archer ined. from Sri Lanka. Please note this
name/combination is not yet published and is based on Cassine balae
Kostermans in Gard. Bull. Singapore 39:185 (1987); Wadhwa in Revised Flora
of Ceylon X: page 87 (1996). It is in many respect very similar to
Elaeodendron orientale from the Mascarene Island of Mauritius. The round
fruit is immediately different from the sharp pointed fruit in Elaeodendron
orientale.

With best wishes, Robert

Quite convinced with fruit aspect discussed by Dr Robert H. Archer
Having inferred the ID to *Elaeodendron orientale*, searched flickr and
internet for more information regarding this identity.
Stumbled upon fruit pictures which do not agree with those seen in my photos
... did not have quick courage to re-put my doubt.

The picture of *E. orientale* fruits on flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lindadevolder/2112788587/ which raised query in
my mind,
A small description at Republic of Mauritius website :
http://www.gov.mu/portal/site/npcs/menuitem.5dbdbc2b5dcd53090eb4dc46a0208a0c

Thoughts coming to my mind:
... what would be the age of this *Elaeodendron *tree in Veermata Jijabai
Bhosale Udyan (Rani Bagh)
... ... if planted by the British, makes me wonder of them getting such kind
of rare exotic trees.
... ... ... if planted by VJBU administration, the superintendent could
possibly have record of this plant.

Regards.
