Dear Sam ji, Thank you very much, as always. Agreed, "hamatta" is not a Malayalam "word", but the Latin epithet can very well be used as a "name" in any language, I do not think there should be any restriction. In case you come across any known Malayalam name for this species, please help me with it.
In Maharashtra, this species is known by the name "hamata" though it is not a Marathi word. This species was introduced long back in south India - I do not know much about it. Now, it is cultivated in many states of India, as forage and for its seeds; largest production being in Andhra Pradesh. I have used the specific epithet as a name in most of the regional languages where it is known to be cultivated. If I get to know of names in those languages, I will place them in the compilation.
