The name of family Apocynaceae is based on a genus Apocynum L. Apocynum is derived from the Greek: 'apo' means "away from"; "cyno' means dog, attributed to its toxicity due to a compound called CYMARIN. It was used to keep dogs away or as dog poison in ancient times.
