The Cactus Garden was founded by Dr JS Sarkaria who unfortunately
passed away a couple of years ago. Twenty five odd years ago he began
a Society for Cactus and Succulents. We used to meet in Chandigarh, on
the first Sunday of every month to discuss plants, various growing
techniques, exchange seedlings and cuttings, drink tea and have
brunch. I have some great memories. A journal was published quarterly
and I still have my old copies in storage
He was very generous with his time and plants and I learnt much from
him. Every visit to his house would generate some new species for
me.
A new flower, or successful growth of seedling was cause for much
excitement. It is not easy to grow cacti from seeds as they are very
susceptible to fungus.
Once a year in October we had a Cactus and Succulent show where
everyone was encouraged to bring their beauties for display.
