Aarti: Ilex... the holly leaves will look like this... family:
Malphigia leaves look like this too... Until the flowers appear... and one measures leaves and looks at them carefully... Holly leaves tend to be leathery, large..2 - 3 inches long and up to and inch or so wide... Malphigia..esp the malphigia that is popular with nurseries for last few years in India is Malphigia coccigera. "dwarf holly" ... or " miniature holly "... has white flowers (structurally reminiscent of Barbados cherry flowers which are pink... its another Malphigia, but leaves are not not like holly, they are simple regular leaves) .. The dwarf holly was used in some areas as a boundary.hedge plant.. apparently even goats do not like it... because of the spinous leaves people do not like to walk through the hedge either... ITS LEAVES ARE NOT AS LEATHERY AS ILEX/HOLLY LEAVES AND ARE MUCH SMALLER ..... SO YOUR HOME WORK IS TO MEASURE THE LEAVES AND TAKE A PICTURE OF THE BRANCH TO SHOW THE LEAF ATTACHMENT TO THE TWIG STEM... take a ruler with you to photograph with the leaves .... AND ask the nursery guy... if it gets flowers... and when? ==== I have one in my balcony, bought it last summer, it was choke full of white flowers that reminded me of the barbados cherry flower... but I the spines in this plant stuck to my fingers... and I could hang one from its spine hooked into my finger skin... I have pics but since i got anew hard drive.. donot know which cd its in... too much filing/ refiling to do... it only flowers in summer... at least in calcutta... its just sitting there... even with flower inducing foods... ==== Hope this helps Usha di ps here's a link to dwarf holly leaves.... http://toptropicals.com/pics/garden/m1/EleNZ2/Malpighia_coccigera161el.jpg being toptropicals.. its a fun site to look at all the malphigias...
