Dear All You may not be aware, so I thought of informing you. There is one guy on facebook, on flora of india to which many of our members are a part, Mr. Manoj Chandran. He is one of the senior forest department officials in Pithoragarh. You may ash him for help. He is a very nice guy and a good taxonomist himself with expertise on grasses. There is no guest house in Gori Valley. Just a inspection chowki. Though I stayed with my friend Jyotsna at this place, but it doesnt have good facilities. In the mid of Gori valley there is a hotel, which can accomodate all. Thats the only hotel in the area till 2 years back. You may trek from Bangapani to Panar or from Madkot or Jauljibi. Weather at this time would be a bit warm and dry. Dont take a dip in the main gori ganga river but dont be hesitant going to the tributaries. Its a good thing. You might find some endangered frogs there too... When you just get down to the valley from Munsiyari side, then you can actually go ahead till the road goes on the left hand side. Its a good forest and some interesting Buteas there. I found a new species pf Pholidota there which I couldnt identify as I didnt have flowers. One the way from Munsiyari you will find the endemic palm, Trachycarpus takil. Very rare and only very few individuals left in the wild. Gori Valley has around 120 species of Orchids of which around 6 are endemic to Uttarakhand. Flickingeria hesperis and Eria occidentalis endemic to Gori Valley. Look out for the animals too, including, Rex Fox, King Cobra, lot of birds, leopard, jackal, goral, kakar, other snakes, wolf is also reported... Dont get disheartened by the dryness, you still can find unique plants in flowers including orchids. To my surprise, I found one scorpion sitting on an orchid flower. It was too small and could have been pollinating mistakenly but couldnt take good pic unfortunately.... :(. Durign the same trip I found one very unique Ceropegias, but dropped its flower while coming down. I am very sure it was a new species too !!! Feel free to talk with locals. You may like to visit local school and meet the kids. Its a nice attitude to win over locals.
