PhD Studentship in ethnobiology to study the relationship between language, 
culture and biodiversity.

Description: The student will conduct research to understand the relationship 
between language, culture and biodiversity. Language is the tool for 
identifying, recognising and utilisation of biodiversity. When language is 
lost, use knowledge of biodiversity is also lost. Approaching this issue from 
the ethnobotanical side, the student would study the status of knowledge 
related to biodiversity, using language as a proxy. A significant portion of 
his/her data would be drawn from the project The impact of displacement on 
traditional ethnobotanical knowledge of the Kelabit community of the Bario 
highlands of Sarawak, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. The 
project involves extensive fieldwork for the first year during which the 
candidate will be living with the community. 
Person Specification: Applicants should have a first or second class Master’s 
degree in Ethnobotany/ Botany, with demonstrated experience in ethnobotanical 
field work with indigenous communities and passion for plants.

•                    First (or second) class Master’s degree in Ethnobotany/ 
Botany
•                    Experience in working with indigenous communities in a 
participatory manner
•                    Demonstrated experience in ethnobotanical field work.
•                    Ability to identify plants independently up to the species 
level
·                     Proficient in basic statistical tools.
·                     A high level of understanding of field research methods 
pertaining to ethnobotany and anthropology
•                    Good communication skills
•                    Skilled in basic computer usage, word processing and 
spreadsheet.
