"Silly me! I thought the two Boses were both the same person all these
years! I had just thought he was a man of exceedingly varied talents and
interests! I stand corrected - and thanks! It was easier just to call it
the Indian Botanic Garden - maybe in 10 years it will become Mamata's
garden! Same renaming goes on in modern Britain too sometimes - just as
long as we never get any "Blair Streets", I hope!!
Yes, L. polystachyum occurs in Manipur, too - though rare there, I didn't
know it got into Assam, perhaps near to Manipur side? It is indeed a
remarkable species with its deeply lobed "pinnules" - I have seen it in the
field only in Thailand and Myanmar. Can one cultivate it? - it would look
splendid in any garden.
Presumably the two further species in Assam (and West Bengal plains) are L.
microphyllum, common in the wet areas, with small, shorter, cordate-based
segments, and L. salicifolium - the latter rather near flexuosum, but
without the long basal lobes in most pinnae, and a having consistently
swollen junctions at the segment bases where the ultimate segments absciss
and fall off in old fronds, leaving only the branched leaflet-stalks. L.
salicifolium is often overlooked, but is a perfectly distinct species.
L. altum is another species in the area, with toothed and long segments,
but I find it hard to separate from L. longifolium - if, indeed it is a
separate species. Dixit & Panigrahi's account of the genus was generally
pretty good, though they mistakenly reported L. mearnsii - then Holttum's
account for Flora Malesiana is very helpful.
Best wishes and thanks,
Chris F.-J."
