**Dennis Ritchie, father of C programming language and Unix operating
system, is reportedly dead. Ritchie died at his home this past weekend,
after a long battle against an unspecified illness.

The news was first made public by Canadian software engineer and author Rob
Pike on his Google+ Page.
Born in 1941 in Bronxville, New York, Ritchie graduated from Harvard with a
BS in mathematics and a PhD in physics before joining Bell Labs in 1968. He
was a member of the team working on building a general computer operating
system.
