The entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of the Sports Division retail chain is worth £780m, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The 44-year-old, from New Cumnock in Ayrshire, is ranked 72nd on the UK list. He has previously topped the Scottish list, but fell away after property investments and charity donations. Lord Laidlaw is Scotland's second-richest person with £730m, while the Grant and Gordon whisky family jumped from eighth place to third. David Murray, the Rangers chairman, is fifth-richest in Scotland with £650m. JK Rowling, the Harry Potter author, also moved down the table from fourth place to eighth with her £550m fortune. Mr Hunter made £290m by selling Sports Division to JJB Sports in 1998. He has made a string of investments, most recently taking a £77m stake in Wyevale Garden Centres and in Travelodge Hotels and the Spirit Pub Groups. Mr Hunter also pledged £100m to the Hunter Foundation, set up to invest in enterprise and educational initiatives aimed largely at children. The richest man in Britain is Lakshmi Mittal, the steel magnate, who is worth an estimated £14.8bn. He came in above Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner, in second place with £10.8bn. The Duke of Westminster was third, having enjoyed a £1bn rise in his fortune to £6.6bn. In fourth is Hans Rausing, whose fortune has remained the same at £4.95bn thanks to his interests in the food packaging industry. Making up the top five are retailers Philip and Tina Green, the highest-ranked husband-and-wife team, who have amassed a £4.9bn fortune.
