Tanggapan seorang psikolog tentang Hermione pada film Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkabhan: The latest expert to jump on the accusation train is Professor James Garabino, an American psychologist who told a Parenting Imperatives conference in Adelaide that Harry's female friend, Hermione Granger, was a bad role model for young women. Why? Because she punched the odious Draco Malfoy in the face in the third movie (and book) and, after doing so, exclaims: "That felt good." According to Garabino, this act encourages copycat behaviour and violence in young women. Hermione's behaviour is totally uncharacteristic and, most importantly, takes place in a fictitious world, something audiences young and old would have been more than able to comprehend. And that's the entire point. So many experts are concerned about establishing a causal link between violence as it's portrayed in the media and physical aggression that they overlook and, in the process negate, an important aspect of children's self-development. That is, the role of make-believe violence. Adults have been "trained" to understand any angry gesture or play as a threat to the social fabric â whether it occurs on a screen, a playground, a home or in a public space. Hermione's timely punch may inspire some children to replicate her actions, but I doubt it. Not if parents are there to explain this is a story, it's not real and to place the punch in context: that there are consequences to words and actions, punching isn't a plausible solution and that even bullies, when they are confronted, back down. After all, they're usually frightened and anxious themselves. Hermione's gesture was simply part of a rich make-believe world and functioned as a symbol of empowerment in a dangerous situation not, as the professor assumes, a call to action.
