SINGAPORE--In line with its server product upgrade, Linux seller Red
Hat will release a new operating system for desktop computers, a
senior company official has confirmed.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, the latest iteration of the firm's
flagship server operating system, could be launched as early as next
month, various industry sources have revealed. Based on version 2.6
of the Linux kernel, the product is expected to feature a slew of
security and networking enhancements, including support for a set of
utilities called Security-Enhanced Linux.

Steve McWhirter, Red Hat's vice president for Asia-Pacific, told
CNETAsia in an interview the firm will also unveil its latest desktop
operating system alongside the debut of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

"We've spent a significant amount of money enhancing that (desktop)
offering. It will roll out when we announce the next version of Red
Hat Enterprise Linux," he said.

Amongst other improvements, Red Hat's upcoming desktop operating
system will feature better interconnectivity with gadgets such as USB
thumb drives and digital cameras by having a vastly-expanded pool of
device drivers.

"The next release of Red Hat desktop is designed to enable people
with standard Windows skills to install and use it off the rack. You
can plug in digital cameras, USB keys, and they will work," McWhirter
hinted.

Taking a similar approach as its first desktop offering which was
launched last May, the new desktop product will be sold on a
subscription basis and is targeted mainly at corporate users with
less-demanding computing requirements.

Red Hat is also evaluating the possibility of bundling the new
desktop operating system with its server offerings, he added.
