Red Hat Enterprise Linux v4 Targets Solaris

Red Hat has finally announced the much awaited, global availability of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux v.4 (RHEL v.4), which the Linux player claims can apparently
eliminate the need for Solaris in the enterprise segment. Obviously, Red Hat
seems to be feeling the heat now that Sun has parked Solaris in the Open Source
space.
Commenting on the occasion, Javed Tapia, director, Red Hat India said,
"Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux), solid performance and an interoperable
desktop are three compelling reasons for Indian enterprises to choose RHEL 4
for their enterprise-wide deployments."
RHEL v4 has capabilities ranging from mobility/wireless support (including
Intel Centrino), to plug-and-play USB device recognition, to power management
for laptops.
Tapia further added, "RHEL v4 supports five Indian languages namely Hindi,
Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi. These local language desktops will play a
significant role in increasing Open Source and Linux adoption in India,
crossing over language barriers and ensuring that benefits of technology are
available to millions of Indians."
Red Hat has engineered RHEL v.4 with prime focus on platform stability and
maturity based on the Linux 2.6 kernel, productivity improvements for the
desktop and exceptional performance and scalability for both 32- and 64-bit
workloads. RHEL v.4 is available on 64-bit Intel Xeon and Itanium
processor-based systems, AMD64, IBM POWER, z-Series and S/390 and other x86
systems.
Hundreds of applications are currently in process to become certified on Red
Hat Enterprise Linux v.4. With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4,
more than 750 systems have been certified on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
This version of RHEL has been long awaited by many Red Hat followers, and in
general the Linux community. With the release of Novell Linux Desktop (based on
the 2.6 kernel) towards the end of 2004, Red Hat seems to be back in the game,
with the new 2.6 kernel and a plethora of desktop productivity features.
